A PERFUME BOTTLE that once lived on the shelves of a perfume store was very proud of his smell, as he was made from the extracts of a flower so rare and exotic that not even he could pronounce its name.
One day, however, a gentleman that wore an expensive and shiny suit stopped and took a smell. “I’d give a fortune to buy this bottle… if only I had one…”, the gentleman admitted as the perfume’s scent filled his nostrils. He, then, closed the bottle and placed it back on the shelf.
“It’s true that I’m worth a fortune”, the perfume bottle boasted to the other bottles on the shelf. So, he decided to sell himself as high as he could. Making sure the saleswoman was not looking, he gave a big jump from the shelf, then went out in the streets to go after his fate. He then found a merchant and asked him to place him in an auction, so that any would-be buyers would place as much as they please to buy him.
The first one to buy the perfume was a rich man, who had been alone in his whole life and had no friends. So, he gave a fortune to buy the bottle, yet got very sad when he realized he had no one to smell him and admire. So, after a few days passed, the rich man returned the perfume to the merchant.
The second one to buy the perfume was a painter. He got really excited to smell the content of the bottle. As great as his excitement was, however, so equally great was his anger the next day that he wore the perfume in an art exhibition that he had organized, when he realized that his customers were more in awe of the perfume than they were of his artwork. So, he returned it back to the merchant from whom he bought it in the first place.
The third one to buy it was a person in love, who was so lovestruck that he spent all his fortune on it. He, then, showered himself with the perfume and went on a date to find his beloved. As soon as she smelled it, however, she became red, as she was allergic to exotic flower scents. Not only did he not amaze her, but instead, he got really angry to realize he had done her harm: instead of returning the scent to the merchant as the previous two buyers, he threw it in a river.
“What if I sold myself to the highest bidder, it was all for nothing…”, the perfume bottle murmured in despair and waved at a nearby passer to help him get out of the river The passer-by then collected the perfume and smelled it. Having realized he had gotten an expensive perfume like that for free, he flew with joy.
He was a writer, who got so intoxicated by the perfume’s scent that day, that for the next months he kept smelling it so as to get inspiration, and write the most beautiful novel.
