A LUTE that once came from Crete dreamed of one day playing in a choir. “The lyres of Crete beg me to play with them”, he used to say, thinking himself destined for greater things. So, one day, he took the ship to Athens.
He, first, gathered information about the music schools in Athens, then chose the one with the best fame. He, then, wore his best clothes, and knocked on the school’s door with excitement, patiently waiting for someone to open. A few minutes later, a French horn showed up.
“I come from the aristocratic family of chor-do-pho-nes”, the lute proudly exclaimed, adding: “and I’ve come all the way from Crete to join your music band”.
The French horn was not excited in the least, however. He welcomed the lute in the music school coldly, then summoned the other musical instruments, trumpets, pianos, guitars and violins to decide whether they wanted him or not. “How about having a demo?”, the cello, who was known as a strict judge, asked.
The lute took his notes out of his bag, and found one of the best Cretan folk songs to play. “Your eyes are the sea; your face is the sun. One smile of yours and Spring will come!”, the lute sang in front of them, giving his best self. When he reached the end of the song, the other musical instruments applauded him. “Nice”, the cello said, only to add: “but your sound does not much the other musical instruments in the music school”. Much to their disappointment, the other musical instruments realized the cello was right, and agreed. “But all the lyres of Crete beg to play with me!”, the lute said with disappointment. He, then, looked around to see if there was any lyre, only to realize that the closest was an aristocratic harp, who didn’t even bother look him in the eye. He got really disappointed and said: “Alright… Maybe it’s best if I leave then” as he started packing his bags. The rest of the musical instruments got back to their work. A violin that came from Cyprus then appeared, who said: “Excuse me Sir, but it’s quite common on my island to complement the lute with violin instead of the lyre. Would you perhaps want to collaborate with me?”. As soon as the cello heard it, he went red with shame. The rest of the violins, however, all coming from different islands of the Aegean, remembered they had occasionally collaborated with a lute or two. No sooner had he packed his belongings than a whole team of violins eager to work with him had gathered. “Of course, I do”, the lute exclaimed. Seeing that their melodies matched perfectly the lute’s, they started playing traditional dances from the Greek Islands, and the rest of the musical instruments gathered around them to hear their wonderful sound. And so, not only was our good lute accepted in the music school, but also gathered fame as a rising star as everybody wanted to collaborate with him....
