ONCE UPON A TIME in a land far away there lived a wild boar which had caused great damage: it ravaged the fields of farmers, killing the sheep and wounding humans with its horns in its passage. The King had promised a great reward to those who would help catch it, alive or dead, but the boar was so strong that nobody managed to contain it. So much damage did the boar cause, that eventually the King raised the reward to a thousand gold pieces and asked for it to be brought before him at all costs.
In that same land lived two brothers, the sons of a poor peasant, whose field was also destroyed by the boar. Having no other property or animals from which they could make money, their father asked them to catch the wild boar so they could buy a new field. The first son, who was very cunning, however, thought of keeping the money for himself. The youngest son, who was naive and innocent on the other hand, volunteered out of his good heart and respect for his father.
So, they both appeared before the King, who told them: "To capture the wild boar, it would be best if you entered the forest from different sides". And so, the older brother entered from the West, whereas the younger one from the East.
After a long walk, a dwarf holding a spear appeared in front of the younger brother, telling him: "Since you're guileless and pure, I will give you this spear and this net to help you catch the wild boar. But before killing it, try using words to talk sense to it. As nobody has attempted to in the past, only aiming to take its head off with an axe and bring it before the King as a trophy".
The dwarf then disappeared. The young brother took the spear and the net and courageously walked through the woods. Only a moment later, he saw the boar, which attacked him. He used the spear to defend himself and evade the boar's attacks, until he eventually managed to trap it using the net. As the boar was no longer able to move, the brother said:
"I have no desire to kill you, only to take you to our King as proof that you can no longer do any more harm to the fields".
The wild boar then spoke with a human voice: "So be it. I will come before your King so that you take your reward".
And so, they both agreed that the young brother would present the wild boar as loot to the King and then it would be set free outside the Kingdom. The brother removed the net and took the long way to the King's Palace carrying the boar on his shoulders.
Darkness soon fell, and when the older brother, who had tried many times until that point to find the boar and failed to do so, sneaked behind him. So jealous did he get, that he thought of a trick so as to steal the boar from his brother. Among his supplies were two loafs of bread and a few bottles of wine.
The older brother then shouted from the woods: "Come rest brother, and drink some of the wine that I have with me".
Unsuspecting and naive, the younger brother tied the wild boar on a tree and sat down to get some drink. Soon, however, he got dizzy from the wine and fell asleep on spot. The older brother than tied him on a tree and cut the wild boar's head using an axe so as to present the loot himself in front of the King. So, he appeared in front of him to present him with his great deed.
When he asked for the big reward, however, something totally unexpected happened: the wild boar's head came alive, and told the King, using a human voice: "Give him nothing my Kind, as he is not the one that caught me alive, but his brother, whom he tricked so as to take the reward for himself. You will find him tied on a tree in the woods".
The wild boar then went silent. The older brother was ashamed at first, only to deny everything a moment later, pretending that he knew nothing. The King, however, was furious, and asked his servants to search the forest and find the younger brother at all costs. So, it happened.
Many hours later, the guards brought the younger brother, who told the story to the King. After ordering the older brother to be locked in prison, he gave the young one a thousand gold pieces as a reward.
With them, he bought a new field for his father with whom they lived many years.
