A SPEAKER that once lived in a music school had the bad habit of speaking non-stop. Whenever someone talked to him, he always monopolized the conversation, making sure his voice was heard louder than everyone else’s.
One day, however, the unexpected happened: the speaker went mute. Every time he tried to speak, he ended up whispering or even moving his lips with no sound coming out. At times even, his voice came out very rough and could barely be heard. The other musical instruments in the school found it funny at first, only to get worried later on as he was known for being a non-stop and loud talker. He, on the other hand, got so afraid that he thought he would stay like that for the rest of his life.
A week then passed and as he was yet to see his voice improve, he thought of asking the help of the other musical instruments. First, he tried to talk, yet his voice came out so husky that nobody understood what he said. Then, he used hand gestures and pointed at his tight throat. Not getting anywhere, in the end he simply took a black marker and a big piece of paper and wrote the following letters: “PLEASE HELP ME, I CAN’T SPEAK”.
“Maybe it’s best if we communicate with the speaker like this from now on”, said the microphone who had gone deaf from his loud voice.
“If it’s something serious, you will be the ones to blame”, the noisy trumpet said. So, they put two and two together, and decided to get him to a doctor. After visiting all the doctors in the city, they found the type of doctor that specializes in all the things related to the throat. “O-TO-LA-RYN-GO-LO-GIST” wrote the sign outside. None of the musical instruments pronounced it properly.
“The reason why the speaker went mute is because he overstressed his vocal cords”, the doctor explained. “If he spoke less, or even, if he made pauses instead of speaking nonstop, he wouldn’t have to suffer like the way he does”. He then prescribed medicine, and asked the speaker to speak only when needed. Under no circumstances should he shout or stress his vocal cords again. The speaker was relieved to hear the doctor’s assessment.
A few days later, and after the speaker made great effort to stick to the doctor’s advice, his voice came back. From that point, he promised he would speak less and let others do most of the talking instead, so as to avoid having the same happening to him again.
The other musical instruments found it really hard to believe his promise, yet were very happy to see their friend had got his voice back.
