ONCE UPON A TIME in a grocery store, there lived a cucumber that really loved rock music. In his collection, one could find the rarest and most prized discs from rock bands and musicians that he really adored. “I want to be like them”, he used to say.
The cucumber that wanted to be a rockstar
So one day, he came up with the idea to make his own rock band, and he started by asking the other fruit and vegetables in the grocery store if they would like to cooperate with him. But in the whole garden, there was no single fruit to be found that knew how to play the guitar, the drums or the keyboard. Instead, they would just promise to him that they would start learning ‘should they need to’. As for the singer, he didn’t even mind to ask, because he wanted to keep the role for himself.
“Best learn everything myself then so as to earn the full round of applause”, thought the cucumber, disappointed that he could not find a single worthy partner in the whole garden. So he went over to the nearest music store and bought an electric guitar, a keyboard set, as well as a pair of drums that he placed in an abandoned storage room. Then he started rehearsing for a full day and a full night, with nobody’s help but an old dusty book of music scores to guide him, full of classic rock songs that he loved to listen to. First he trained himself in singing, then in playing the keyboard. Last but not least, he mastered the electric guitar.
As soon as he felt ready, he announced to the fruit and vegetables of the grocery store: “Today I would like to sing to you some classic rock songs. Since I have nobody to help me, I’ll play all the music organs by myself”. The other fruit and vegetables were surprised to hear the announcement, since they had never heard of a music band with a single member. The cucumber however took a chair, brought the microphone right in front of him and then started to play the electric guitar that was strapped around his waist with his left hand, hitting either the drums or the keyboard with his right hand from time to time.
He would then come closer to the microphone, only to step away from it the moment after, and then stretch far to reach either the drums or the keyboard. Back and forth he would move between the different music organs, only to forget his notes a couple of minutes later and make a clumsy move to take a glimpse at the music stand in front of him. The fruit and vegetables of the grocery store burst into laughter only to see him tearful through his cables, but as soon as he stood up, they applauded him for his brave effort and talent and gave him a helping hand.
“You cannot possibly do everything by yourself”, they told him, and he then decided to simply live with the fact that he would have to cooperate with the most talented of them, if he really wanted to have a rock band. So, they all went to a music school; some of them learned the drums, others the keyboard or the guitar, and our big talent, the cucumber, learned how to sing and how to be his best self while on stage.
Rumors say that many years later, the cucumber of our story became a very well known rockstar, who collaborated with the biggest names in the music scene.
