A SUGAR BOWL once loved sweet things and lost little chance to share her sugar with the other silverware of the household. And they, from the hospitable teapot to the gossip-loving coffee pot, gracefully accepted the sugar which she generously offered and used it to add a sweet flavor to everything they made.
"Instead of giving your sugar away, you should be charging good money for it", the miser coffee cup told her one day. Our good sugar bowl didn't even want to hear about it at first. A few hours later, however, the first thoughts started troubling her: "I've given them so much sugar... shouldn't they perhaps have paid me back somehow?" So, she thought of charging it by the spoon. "You can't possibly ask money for that!", the other silverware complained, almost bursting to tears in the thought that they would have to pay for something they had taken for granted. "Yet it's been so many times that I have given you sugar for free, and you wasted it", the sugar bowl replied and they understood that they had gone too far with constantly asking for free stuff. In the end, they agreed to pay a small price so as to get the quantities each one needed. This way, the sugar bowl made her first money out of selling sugar. But as time passed, she became greedy. First, she charged a coin for each spoon, but as soon as she saw the demand was high, she doubled the price. The other silverware were shocked to hear the news, but soon realized there was nothing to be done as she had a monopoly on sugar. "Without sugar my tea will taste like water...", the teapot justified herself when she gave in to the unfair bargain. One after another, the silverware of the house gave in so as not to run out of work. And so, only a few days later, the sugar bowl found herself charging... a hundred coins for a single spoon. She then put the coins in pouches and hid it under her bed's mattress, just like the miser coffee cup did. "Soon enough no one will have the money to meet her demands", the jam bowl complained. "Let's stop buying this very moment and teach her a good lesson", the milk carafe said angrily and all the silverware agreed. The very next day during breakfast, the coffee pot would make sugarless coffee and tea would be served without sugar, just like milk and orange juice. So it happened. "Is everything alright with you?", the sugar bowl asked them, seeing them walk around with sour faces. "Since you don't stop raising the prices, we've decided to live without your sugar", the teapot, whose tea was now tasteless, told her. The sugar bowl then thought of tasting some coffee to see if they had told her the truth. As soon as she drank the first sip, however, her face also went sour. "It's not too bad... is it?", she said but as soon as she took a second sip, she felt disgusted. "Water!", she exclaimed and the water bottle ran to her aid. "Let’s see how much I can charge you now that you need me”, she told her, and the silverware burst into laughter. The sugar bowl went red with shame to hear it, and apologized. As for the price of sugar? After taking her lesson, our good sugar bowl decided to share her sweetness once again free of charge, just like good old times....
